Hi there,

I’m Susan Freinkel, a San Francisco-based writer and author of two books — one about species loss (American Chestnut: The Life, Death and Rebirth of a Perfect Tree) and one about the rise of plastic and its impacts on the planet and us (Plastic: A Toxic Love Story).

These days I’m thinking about parks: urban green spaces in general and the 1,017-acre miracle known as Golden Gate Park, specifically.

I’ve lived a block from Golden Gate Park and visited it on a near-daily basis for close to 35 years (as one does when they have a dog and a husband who wants to protect their backyard garden.) I’ve always loved it. But you know how you can stop seeing the everyday wonders of your life? So I’m exploring it with fresh eyes. I hope you’ll join me as I follow my curiosity about the people, the flora and fauna, the history and present-day happenings that make this amazing place.

I’ll be sending out a post every week or two, sometimes more. At least, that’s the goal. As anyone who’s ever hoped to have a sunny picnic in Golden Gate Park will understand, plans can be undone by things beyond your control.
